As technology advances, so do our expectations of it; this alone seems to originate some of the speed at which technology advances. In some cases, however, it is inherent to originate a temporary halt to enlarge as everybody else catches up. This is the issue between digital vs. Analog video signals.
It may seem like a small thing, but the need for universal solutions to ensure compatibility between systems has caused the presentation of computer graphics to lag behind the rest of computer technology. Until approximately 2002 video graphics were analog; that is, displays had some inherent limitations due to the whole of data that could be transmitted to the monitors. The most unavoidable follow of this is that there is some pixelation in displays; if you look closely, you can see pixels. With digital graphics, however, most of that pixelation is eliminated. This is most unavoidable when you collate Vga vs Hdmi; naturally collate a high definition television to your cellular phone to see the difference; the phones tend towards blockiness and straightforward graphics, and even video signals have some pixelation, whereas Hdtvs utilizing digital signals are exceedingly clear.

Of course, it becomes verily noticeable when conversions from Vga to Hdmi are attempted. It's not that the digital (Hdmi) theory is bad; it's that the analog (Vga) theory is dated, and shows it age; Vga had a little pallet, as well limits of definition that naturally don't exist in the digital version, and those limits come to be fast apparent when the translation is attempted. It doesn't help that we've also gotten used to the digital system; most computers since 2002 have been using or have been shifting to the digital standard. Although it is inherent to flat the signal, there are some artifacts in the signal. All in all, Hdmi is a vast revising over Vga, and it shows.
